Tips from our Team – Wemi Opakunle

This month’s tips come from Wemi Opakunle, an Account Manager on our Los Angeles team. Wemi has been in the industry since 2006 and her focus is on placing talented and passionate candidates within equally passion filled and life changing roles. When she’s not recruiting, she’s designing and writing about all things fashion.

Tips for Job Seekers

blog-tips-team-v3-300There’s a thin line between enthusiasm and desperation.
You need the job! You want the job! Whatever the reason behind you having to have that job, it’s essential not to let enthusiasm turn into desperation. There is nothing attractive about desperation. I always say, approach job hunting like you do dating. Show up, show interest but let things happen organically and naturally.

Research, research and then research some more.
It’s amazing how many people go into interviews without finding out everything they possibly can about the client they’re meeting with. Keep in mind that Google and LinkedIn are your best friends pre-interview.

Never stop tweaking.
All jobs aren’t created equal and neither are all resumes. It’s important to edit your resume according to the job you’re applying for. If a job calls for a certain proficiency, make sure you’re highlighting that skill and putting it front and center. Most clients won’t spend time digging through your resume to see if you’re a fit for their job. It literally takes less than a minute to decide if you’re right for them, which means you have a very small window to impress.

Tips for Employers

Preparation goes both ways.
As much as we hear about unprepared talent, we also often hear about unprepared clients. It’s important to give the talent the same level of courtesy as they’re offering you. If the first time you’re seeing the talent’s resume is as you’re meeting them, it reflects poorly on you and your company. No one wants to feel like an afterthought.

What makes you unique?
The industry is always flip flopping between a talent’s market and a client’s market. 2009 is behind us and it’s officially a competitive market for talent again. Every company wants amazing talent on their team, so it’s key to sell yourself and the things that make you standout. Remember, the courtship goes both ways and you’re being sized up as well. The difference between you and another company landing that amazing talent could be as simple as “Ice Cream Thursdays”.

Sometimes, saving money isn’t the answer.
We all love a good bargain, but just because something, or someone, costs you less doesn’t mean they’re the best solution. I can’t say how many times a few dollars saved by picking a more junior candidate has turned into a disaster. As the saying goes, “you get what you pay for.”
