Job Seeker Soup: A Hearty Serving of Advice

Welcome to Onward Search’s Job Seeker Soup! We’ve boiled down the most valuable articles from the Onward Search Twitter feed into one convenient serving of career boosting goodness. Each link below leads to great advice and guidance that will help you in your career whether it’s in Internet marketing, interactive design or mobile app development.

Enough with the introductions, let’s get down to business! Looking at the Onward Search Twitter feed from this month, the following articles jumped out at me because they’re full of solid guidance or important insight regarding industry developments. I threw in two Social Media related articles because, well, they’re just that good. Let me know which ones you found most interesting and why. I’d love to hear about where you get your news and industry updates. Enjoy!

Feb 7thStrong Growth in Demand for Online Freelancers, Data Shows

Who doesn’t like hearing that their particular field is experiencing higher demand? This article from Gigaom.com offers fantastic news for freelancers, especially those who live outside of large cities. While data like this should be taken with a grain of salt, it’s a promising sign that freelance jobs are moving in a positive direction.

Feb 10thHow to Get a Job in Social Media in 2011

The wonderful folks over at BlueGlass.com did a great job with this blog post because breaking into Social Media has been a gray area for a couple of years now. Since the field is still so new (relatively speaking) there isn’t a step-by-step guide for entering the Social Media workforce, but Stephanie Weingart hits the nail on the head with her advice. If you can use Social Media to successfully market yourself, you’re ready to do it for a brand.

Feb 11th40 Brilliant Examples of Sketched UI Wireframes and Mock-ups

This lovely collection was originally posted in September of last year, but I saw it floating around on Twitter earlier this month and couldn’t resist sharing. This onextrapixel.com article demonstrates the value of escaping from our computers and tablets every so often. If you’re a designer, I hope this article inspires you to bust out your moleskin more often.

Feb 13thThe Dirty Little Secrets of Search

The world of SEO received a LOT of press this month thanks to this New York Times article that exposed the black hat tactics used at J.C. Penney. As Onward Search’s COO, Ken Clark, remarked, “In one article, you’ll learn a lot about the good, bad and ugly [of SEO] and everything in between.” If you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for?

Feb 16thRemarkable Resume Designs

Your resume says so much about you, and often gets to speak for you before you ever shake hands with a future employer, so why not make your resume as creative and innovative as you are? If you need some inspiration, this collection of outstanding resume designs from Noupe.com should do the trick.

Feb 21stWho Are The Experts?

I must tip my hat to Jason Falls for this article and accompanying podcast on SocialMediaExplorer.com that challenge the very concept of being a “Social Media Expert”. I won’t spoil all the fun for you if you haven’t read/listened to it yet, but I will say this: His message pokes holes in the nebulous title and asks “are you making your clients or company happy?” It’s a great read for anyone who isn’t sure about their title.

That’s all for this edition of Job Seeker Soup! I hope you’ve enjoyed it and don’t forget to drop me a comment below if you’ve got some must-read articles to share. I look forward to hearing from you!
