The Talent and Hiring Trends in Philadelphia

We all know Philadelphia is famous for hosting a significant portion of this country’s historical foundation. It’s got the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center and much more, but did you know that this hub of American history is also a hotbed for Internet marketing and creative talent?

It’s true! The city of brotherly love is giving a lot of love to Internet marketers, social media mavens and creative types these days so I asked Michael Lauren and Nancy Burr from the Onward Search Philadelphia Office for their take on the current job market and hiring trends they’re seeing.

The first hot spot that Michael and Nancy pointed out is the area of conceptual copywriting. What makes this different from “traditional” copywriting is the story telling tone it achieves. Michael explains that many companies in the Philly area are looking for copywriters who will “do more than just describe a product or service like they’re listing out a series of ingredients from a recipe. The writing needs to ultimately tell a story, much in the way advertisers build a theme or concept around the product they’re selling.”

He recommends that copywriters in the Philly metro area brush off their imaginations and start think outside the box to land one of these jobs.

On the other side of the Internet marketing jobs spectrum, it seems SEO and social media buffs are enjoying increased demand and attention in the Philly area. Nancy explained she’s seen quite a few organizations go the extra mile to bring on and accommodate these professionals. “Recently, I’ve seen companies in the city create entire departments that are dedicated solely to SEO, Search Engine Marketing and Social Media.” She adds that these companies are committing separate budgets and resources to ensuring their marketing platforms support a healthy mix of SEO and social media tactics.

The coolest part is who they’re looking for. “They want people that are experienced in both SEO and social media. The idea is to build a team that can enhance brands and market position by aligning search and social efforts.” This is outstanding news for anyone who has always wanted to combine their skills into one super-Social-SEO resume and find their dream job. (At least in the Philly  area right now…)

Speaking of getting your resume out there, recent grads who excel in web design will have the easiest time finding work this fall. Both Michael and Nancy agreed that web design is where they consistently receive the most requests for fresh talent.

If you’re located in the Philadelphia area and you’re looking to either take the next step in your career or connect with exceptional talent, contact Michael and Nancy today to learn more about what’s happening in your neck of the woods.
